Port Wine Crafting: An Infographic Journey

Unveiling the Art and Science Behind Port Wine Production

Port wine, with its rich history and complex production process, is a true testament to the art and science of winemaking. Designer Jose Miguel Carvalho Cardoso has beautifully captured the essence of this iconic beverage in an innovative infographic. Through meticulous observation and creative illustration, Cardoso takes us on a journey through the vineyards of Douro Valley, revealing the secrets behind the production of this exquisite drink.

As the vine grows older, it becomes an old strain, symbolizing the transformation of the grapes into a mature and flavorful wine. Using a combination of traditional and digital techniques, Cardoso brings this infographic to life. The initial observational drawings of the grapes were made with a Bic ballpoint pen, capturing the essence of the vineyards. These drawings were then optimized for vector artwork using an iPad and Apple Pencil. The final composition and illustrations were created using Adobe Illustrator, while the typographic and editorial work was done with Adobe InDesign.

This project, which started in December 2018 and concluded in March 2019, was a collaborative effort involving various experts. Wine consultant Ryan Opaz and copywriter Gabriella Opaz provided valuable insights and expertise, ensuring the accuracy and authenticity of the information presented in the infographic. The design was also validated by members of the IVDP Institute of Douro and Porto Wines, further enhancing its credibility.

Cardoso's infographic on Port Wine crafting has received widespread recognition and acclaim. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2021, a prestigious honor bestowed upon designs that exhibit exceptional creativity and resourcefulness.
